Kathryn Hughes is a Canadian painter based in Ottawa.
Her work explores the quiet relationship between shared experiences and the inward lives we carry through them. Working from an abstract foundation, she paints figures who occupy thresholds—the moments between one experience and the next—where people gather, wait, pass through, or simply be.
Drawn to the ordinariness of these encounters, she observes the subtle ways people move through shared spaces while carrying their own experience. Train stations, theatres, waiting rooms, and other familiar places become settings for presence rather than narrative.
Kathryn works intuitively, allowing colour, shape, and gesture to discover the figure rather than describe it.
